Background of the Study
Physical inactivity, defined as insufficient physical activity to maintain health, has become a global public health concern, particularly among young adults. University students, who are at a pivotal stage in life, often face significant changes in lifestyle that can lead to decreased physical activity, contributing to various health issues. In Kano State, a populous region in Nigeria, there is growing evidence of sedentary behavior among university students, largely driven by academic pressures, technological distractions, and limited access to recreational facilities (Aliyu et al., 2024). This trend mirrors global concerns regarding the rising prevalence of physical inactivity, which has been linked to chronic health conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and type 2 diabetes (World Health Organization [WHO], 2023).
Kano State, home to several universities and a large student population, presents an important context for studying the impact of physical inactivity on health. Many students spend long hours studying, attending lectures, and using electronic devices, with minimal time dedicated to physical exercise (National Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2023). As a result, they are at higher risk of developing various health issues that can affect their academic performance and overall well-being. The role of physical activity in maintaining mental health and cognitive function is also crucial, as students who are physically inactive are more prone to stress, anxiety, and depression (Eze & Yusuf, 2024).
This study aims to evaluate the impact of physical inactivity on the health of university students in Kano State, with a focus on both physical and mental health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing body of evidence supporting the benefits of physical activity, university students in Kano State continue to engage in sedentary lifestyles, contributing to the onset of health problems. The absence of regular exercise is associated with several adverse health conditions, including weight gain, hypertension, and mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety (Adebayo et al., 2024).
The problem is compounded by environmental and socio-cultural factors, such as limited access to recreational spaces, academic pressures, and a general lack of awareness about the importance of physical activity. These factors have resulted in a growing public health concern regarding the long-term consequences of physical inactivity on students' health in Kano State.
This study seeks to examine the extent to which physical inactivity affects the health of university students in Kano and identify potential interventions to promote a more active lifestyle.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the impact of physical inactivity on the physical health of university students in Kano State.
2. To assess the psychological effects of physical inactivity among university students.
3. To recommend strategies for promoting physical activity among university students in Kano State.
Research Questions
1. What is the relationship between physical inactivity and physical health issues among university students in Kano State?
2. How does physical inactivity affect the mental health of university students in Kano State?
3. What are the barriers to physical activity among university students, and how can they be overcome?
Research Hypotheses
1. Physical inactivity is associated with negative physical health outcomes among university students in Kano State.
2. Physical inactivity significantly contributes to mental health issues such as stress and anxiety among university students in Kano State.
3. Increasing physical activity among university students will improve both physical and mental health outcomes.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on university students in Kano State, assessing the impact of physical inactivity on both physical and mental health. Limitations include the potential for self-reporting bias in the assessment of physical activity levels and health status, as well as challenges in measuring long-term health impacts in a cross-sectional study.
Definition of Terms
• Physical Inactivity: Insufficient physical activity or exercise to maintain health, typically defined as engaging in less than 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.
• Physical Health: The well-being of an individual in terms of fitness, absence of disease, and overall bodily function.
• Mental Health: A state of well-being in which an individual can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their community.
